[SBB] Coe Birds

A belated report from a walk taken at Henry Coe SP on Thursday, 12/28.
Varied Thrush were abundant, which is consistent with many other reports
from the region this season. A Canyon Wren was in Grizzly Gulch. At least
twenty Wood Duck were seen in a small pond on the south side of Hunting
Hollow.

The big surprise was a calling Pileated Woodpecker seen very late in the day
about 100 yards in the from the end of the Hunting Hollow parking lot, in an
area of Sycamores along the creek bed. This is my first record of this
species in the park and is, I suspect, highly unusual for the Diablo Range
anywhere. I did not see the bird well enough to determine its sex, but
large excavations on trees in the area indicate it has been there for likely
at least a couple of days. If anyone else observes this bird, I would
appreciate being notified of any details.
