Today at noon Jan Hintermeister & I went for a short hike at
Russian Ridge, where AMERICAN KESTRELS perched, flew & hovered
nearly the entire time we were there. We also had good looks at
low flying NORTHERN HARRIER, TURKEY VULTURE, and RED-TAILED HAWK.
Afterwards we stopped by the MB05 entrance at Monte Bello and took the
short walk to the pond where we saw 1 male & 3 female HOODED
MERGANSERS, 3 PIED-BILLED GREBES, 3 AMERICAN COOTS, and a BLACK
PHOEBE. At the far end of the pond a SORA swam across the corner
in perfect afternoon light, its yellow bill bright in the sun and its
tail bobbing as it swam, then it walked into the reeds and out of
view. What a great way to start the New Year!
