An all day walk at Henry Coe SP on Saturday yielded a couple of interesting
observations.
We saw our first Lark Sparrow of the season near Willson Camp. Also at the
camp, a Canyon Wren sang twice from its usual location, a small gulley just
below the cabin.
Best birds were a pair of Northern Pygmy Owls well seen late in the morning
on the trail to Dowdy Ranch. The birds were sitting in near-by tress and
tooting at each other.
We also were able to follow a Bobcat for a quarter of a mile or so on Steer
Ridge and watch it pounce on, catch, and eat a small furry thing.
On Sunday, the Short-eared Owl at Bixbee Park in Palo Alto was closely
observed around 5:10 PM perched on a metal post on the fence surrounding the
closed portion of the landfill on the SW side of the park. The bird sat
calmly while we had scope filling views and eventually flew off into the
marsh.
