Janet and I took our walk at Alum Rock Park this
morning, along the Creek Trail from the entrance kiosk
parking lot to end of the upper parking lot.
Just below the stone bridge nearest the historic log
cabin was a Wilsons Warbler. A Western-type
Flycatcher was just upstream of Alum Rock. Two
Allens/Rufous-type Hummingbirds were battling two
Annas Hummingbirds at the tree tobacco bush along the
north side of the creek, midway along the upper
parking lot. Two Huttons Vireos were seen, one just
upstream of the YSI in the lawn area and one
downstream of the Rustic Lands near the metal bridge.
It must have been a good year for Stellers Jays
because we saw quite a few.
In the last week, we have added three new yard birds;
Western Wood-Pewee, White-tailed Kite and Northern
Harrier. The raptors were soaring overhead, (at
different times) but the Pewee seemed to be interested
in all the other birds at the feeders and
birdbaths/drippers. Mostly at the feeders are both
Lesser and American Goldfinch, House Finch, House
Sparrows, two Red-winged Blackbirds, Mourning Doves,
Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Western Scrub-Jays and a
Hooded Oriole is still coming regularly to the
sugar-water and the number of hummingbirds has picked
up this last week. It looks like the Battle of
Britain in the evening in our backyard with all the
hummers buzzing around. Northern Mockingbirds are
coming to our blue elderberry, along with House Finch
and House Sparrows, a Nuttalls Woodpecker forages in
a our maple tree, along with Bushtits, and a pair of
Chestnut-backed Chickadees. A Black Phoebe is using
the bird-bath and hanging out in the neighbors
sycamore. Each of the last two mornings, 20-30
American White Pelicans have been seen circling and
moving to the east (Calaveras Reservoir?) from the
direction of Alviso. We also had a Coopers Hawk
visit the feeders this past week and a raccoon was
seen walking along the top of our backyard fence.
