I was in the area and didn't particularly want to hurry where I was
going, so I wandered up to Steven's Creek Dam today. didn't expect
much, which is what I found; nothing on the water, not even a
cormorant, and little else in the area -- a few pigeons, a couple of
northern mockingbirds, one swallow of some type or another.
but as I was packing up to leave, I did have one bird fly in and land
in a tree up the hill across the road from the dam parking lot.
Taking a look, it turned out to be a male American Kestrel. It seemed
to be a young one -- strong markings on the head, but less of the
chest and side patterns than I've seen on other birds. It sat for
about five minutes, then flew off away from the dam; I saw it circle
the tree twice and then disappear.
(first time I've seen one up there, for what it's worth)
