Hi Birders-
Went up to Ed Levin Park late this afternoon, since
I haven't been there for a while. Where the nature trail passes under the first
tree there was an adult Red-tailed Hawk moving around in dense
foliage where the branches touch the ground. It looked healthy, but flew weakly.
It was causing a Red-shouldered Hawk up in the tree to be noisy. I located the
RSH and noticed that it was missing its right eye! It flew off with no problem.
Farther down the trail I came upon a pile of Red-shouldered Hawk flight
feathers. There were enough of them that the bird had to have been rendered
flightless. In the middle of the pile was the breastbone of a hawk-sized animal.
Could have been the hawk or its victim. Whatever happened, it must have
been a hell of a fight.
