On Saturday, SFBBO
sponsored a Great Blue Heron day at Vasona Park, highlighting the heron colony
that Linda Sullivan monitors for SFBBO's Colonial Waterbird project. All
the regular visitors at Vasona seem to know Linda. She presided over a
crowd of SFBBO staff and volunteers to show passers-by the heron chicks in the
Vasona colony. Some visitors were fortunate enough to witness adults
feeding chicks. One bird of note was a SPOTTED SANDPIPER in breeding
plumage teetering along the gravelly edge of the creek. Other birds
passing through included an adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a BULLOCK'S
ORIOLE.
