Subject: [MBB] Open Space preserves off Skyline Drive
I took a quick run up to Skyline Drive in the Santa
Cruz Mountains this morning and sampled the birds at
Monte Bello, Russian Ridge and Skyline Open Space
preserves. Best birding was at Monte Bello with
several Lazuli Buntings on territory, Cassin's,
Hutton's and Warbling Vireos, and Black-Throated Grey
Warbler all within the first 1/4 to 1/2 mile of the
parking lot on the main Steven's Creek Nature Trail
heading south. Other birds of interest were
Ash-Throated Flycatcher at Skyline and 2 late pair of
Ring-Necked Ducks at the small pond below the Russian
Ridge parking lot. Also many wildflowers in bloom on a
beautiful spring day.
Directions to Monte Bello: Hiway 9 to Skyline
Drive(35). North to Page Mill and then East(right) to
Monte Bello(about a mile on the right. Lot gets
crowded on weekends, get there early).
