[SBB] Santa Teresa Park

Phyllis Swanson and I enjoyed a beautiful day birding and finding
wildflowers in Santa Teresa park this morning. The Stile Ranch trail
provided great looks at our first singing male LAZULI BUNTING. Four more
were seen throughout the morning, including two males in a territorial
dispute. A selasphorus hummingbird made a brief appearance but could not
be found again. A pair of RUFOUS CROWNED SPARROWS perched in the open
provided great looks. I heard HORNED LARKS singing in the grass near the
top of the first hill again today. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was heard in
the meadow, then perched on a fence on IBM property. VIOLET GREEN
SWALLOWS were swarming around a big Valley Oak tree that had many
suitable nest cavities. BARN SWALLOWS, AM. KESTREL, RED SHOULDERED AND
RED TAILED HAWK, COOPERS HAWK, CO. RAVEN and AM. CROW were seen overhead.

Walking to the Pueblo picnic area we saw the first of three ASH THROATED
FLYCATCHERS, and got terrific looks of a second GRSP. singing from a
rock. This bird was much paler than the first. HOODED and BULLOCKS
ORIOLES, WESTERN BLUEBIRD were seen during lunch. WILD TURKEYS were
displaying on the hill as we returned along the Fortini Trail. WRENTITS,
more RCSP and many strange looking molting GOLDEN CROWNED SP. were in
the chaparral.

Along the creek, we had singing WARBLING VIREO, WILSON'S WARBLER and
ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER. Phyllis spotted our only CAL. THRASHER dashing
across a residents lawn. Four noisy WESTERN KINGBIRDS also seen here. A
YELLOW BILLED MAGPIE, WESTERN MEADOWLARK pair and another kingbird were
spotted on our drive out. Many birds were carrying nesting material or
food for young. BUSHTIT fledglings perched all in a row on a branch were
also memorable.
