All,
This afternoon 4/22/07, my wife Alma and I headed up to Ed Levin Park to look for the Calliope Hummingbirds. A cooperative male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was still present at 4:30pm just after we arrived and it or another was still around when we came back down from the sycamores just after 5:30pm. Tom Grey got a few pictures to document this neat bird.
We then headed up to check on the BALD EAGLE nest, finding a ROCK WREN right where I had seen one a week ago, but where we had been unable to find one yesterday for our Big Day%^!%$^#! The adult BALD EAGLE was tearing off bits of food and feeding them to at least one small nestling, so the egg(s) have now hatched.
A quick stop at Arzino Ranch on the way home turned up the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE we missed yesterday, but there were still no Long-billed Curlews there or at the Palo Alto Baylands a short while later. Given that this latter species was missed by the De-Duck-tions yesterday and by the "Rock Wrens" today (we bumped into them at the Baylands), it seems that this shorebird is indeed surprisingly absent from at least some areas where we normally find them. Arzino Ranch is very dried out, so perhaps this impacted the suitability of that location. Their absence at Palo Alto is a little harder to explain...
