All,
This morning 4/22/07, I made another check of the Guadalupe River north of Curtner Ave. in San Jose. Across from 2180 Almaden Road I got nice looks at a vocal female BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD (with an immaculate white throat) defending her territory against an Anna's Hummingbird. A bit further north, just past the entrance to the River Glen Mobile Home Park, an adult BALCK-CHINNED HUMMGBIRD was perched on a wire. At least one YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was still present along the river.
After this, I again checked the Coyote Creek Golf Course for grackles. I got a brief look at a GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE (appeared to be a male) near the clubhouse, but it disappeared into the reeds not to be seen again. Up at the maintenance yard pond, however, I got nice looks at a pair foraging at the pond edge (the male sang once) before both flew into the reeds, where they were joined by third bird (appeared to be a male). A GREATER YELLOWLEGS here was expected, but a WILLET flying low over the golf course by the clubhouse was a surprise.
