Before the SCVAS meeting Kay Partelow, Debbi Brusco, Jan Hintermeister & I braved the bitter winds at the Palo Alto Baylands Duck Pond. A brightly colored male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE flew from tree to tree. There were dozens of SNOWY EGRETS and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS gurgling in the trees above, sparring every now and then, and showing off their beautiful plumes. GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS seemed to drip out of a planter box tree one at a time, like a leaky faucet. WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS foraged on the ground nearby. In the channel behind the palm trees there was a WILLET in breeding plumage looking much fancier than the typical grey that I am used to seeing.
We saw 3 types of gulls at the duck pond: RING-BILLED (most), WESTERN, and GLAUCOUS-WINGED. As the sun began to set BARN SWALLOWS and CLIFF SWALLOWS swooped down to the pond surface, then back up again. A WHITE-TAILED KITE and a NORTHERN HARRIER quickly flew by, getting a good tail wind.
The SCVAS meeting was very enjoyable and informative. Thank you Lisa!
