Hi all:
Our birdathon team had 142 species yesterday.
Highlights included:
Monte Bello Road:
Western Screech owl
Great Horned Owl
MB05 pond: Sora
Stevens Creek Reservoir:
Common Loon
McClellan Ranch:
Vaux's Swifts
Barn Owl
Lisa Myers doing an imitation of a Wood Duck call.
Awesome. Get her to do this for you! People who are
willing to teach others are special. Lisa's great!
Shoreline Lake:
Common Goldeneye
In a "my my didn't I just learn something" moment....
we had a Great-tailed Grackle fly from the pine at the
end of O'Connor Street south into Santa Clara County
airspace to the end of Geng Rd. The learning was: What
county is East Palo Alto in, anyway?
oy vey
Credit Howard Higley with the i.d. (of the bird, not
the county).
Byxbee Park:
Bonaparte's Gulls
Four Western Kingbirds
Burrowing Owl
Alviso Marina:
Virginia and Sora calling.
EEC:
Pond A17, American White Pelicans
Ed Levin approach -- Old Calaveras Rd.:
Golden Eagle
Loggerhead Shrike
Sandy Wool Sycamore Grove:
Rufous-crowned Sparrow
House Wren
Hang-glider parking:
Lawrence's Goldfinch
Calaveras Res.:
Bald Eagle
Rock Wren
Notable misses were:
Two more owls and a Poorwill.
Warblers, at least Townsend's and Black-throated Gray.
Lazuli Bunting.
The Merlin, Say's Phoebe, and Blue-winged Teal
Jennifer Rycenga had on our route.
Grasshopper Sparrow
The Cassin's Vireo that was calling from the picnic
area in lower Steven's Creek Park this a.m.
and, Green Heron. Bringing our total to...... well,
you know how that goes. :)
Your results may differ; don't try this at home.
Good birding,
Bob Power
Oakland, CA
