I paid a lunchtime visit to Byxbee Park in Palo Alto today. Along
with about 100 Canada Geese were the Ross's Goose and 13 Cackling Geese.
All the small Geese were in the water, where the hillside trail reaches
the trail along the slough (?). Most of the Cackling were comparable in
size to the Ross's. About 7 or so had prominent white rings at the
base of the neck. Among the remainder were 3 birds which appeared
noticeably smaller, candidates for minima; I had the impression that
at least a couple of those had darker breasts, too. (But I'm not 100%
confident of this ID. I didn't see much difference in bill shape, but
perhaps I don't know what to look for.)
After this I checked the end of Geng Road, where I was surprised to
see the Cattle Egret feeding on the lawn immediately across the golf
course pond. (It was still there at 12:55.) The pond didn't have
much in the way of waterfowl -- apart from a lot of Coots, just
Canada Geese and a few Mallards, Ruddy Ducks, and Pied-billed Grebes.
In the eucs I saw an adult male Bullock's Oriole and a breeding-plumaged
male Myrtle Warbler.
