Today (April 1st), Barry Langdon-Lassagne and I went scouting for our
birdathon at various locations in the south county, especially Coyote
Lake/Harvey Bear Ranch County Park.
Birds of note include a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW on the first hill to the
left above the only trail from the parking lot at the Harvey Bear
Ranch entrance, off San Martin Road. From the main parking lot, walk
up the trail past the buildings, to the first gate that leads up into
the open range area. The hill on the left had a very cooperatively
vocalizing grasshopper sparrow, which we hope will remain through our
birdathon date of Apr. 20th. :-) Barry also sighted (but I missed)
his first of year WESTERN KINGBIRD in the vicinity of that gate.
Just below the dam in the forebay-pond at Coyote Lake, we found a
pair of WOOD DUCKS, closely bonded. The drainage holes in the
spillway are harboring a very active breeding colony of NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS.
Another first of the year for us were two separate, calling PACIFIC-
SLOPE FLYCATCHERS in the oaks above Llagas Creek, alongside Uvas Rd
between Oak Glen Rd and Loma Rd.
Finally, near sunset, there were three BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS at State
and Spreckels, one in lovely alternate plumage.
Good birding from the "Jack Sparrows" team,
Ginger & Barry Langdon-Lassagne
