On Sunday, 24 Sep 06, I helped lead a California Fall Challenge bird trip for the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. It was a half day trip of less than 4 hours and made it to Montebello OSP and the Palo Alto Baylands. At Montebello, out 18 year old participant's sharp eyes picked out a couple of wrens in the undergrowth along the road above the sag pond, whose vocalizations confirmed them as a HOUSE WREN and a WINTER WREN. Some warblers working the oaks in this vicinity proved to be a couple of TOWNSEND'S and an immature HERMIT WARBLER, which everyone got great looks at. A handful of VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were foraging well overhead and we were able to pick out at least 2 VAUX'S SWIFTS in with them.
Down at the Baylands we the usual assortment of shorebirds and migrants. Notable birds included a flyby PEREGRINE FALCON and a calling CLAPPER RAIL.
After everyone else left about noon I went over to Shoreline
Lake and found my first-of-the-season HORNED GREBE.
On Monday, 25 Sep 06, I looked, unsuccessfully, for the Clay-colored Sparrow at the SCVWD pond. Then I went up to Montebello to look for migrating raptors, but didn't see a single bird in the sky. Back down in Alviso, I was a little surprised to find that 2 of the 5 TREE SWALLOWS on the wires at SFBBO were adults. Over at State and Spreckles, the 2 immature SNOWY PLOVERS were still present and I saw my first-of-the-season DUNLIN.
Tuesday morning, 26 Sep 06, I went by CCFS to look for migrants, finding 23 YELLOW WARBLERS, 5 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 9 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, 4 HOUSE WRENS, 5 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS, and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER. The high tension wires along the edge of the sludge ponds had 150+ VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS and a lesser number of BARN SWALLOWS.
