This morning, I decided to combine a hike with a search for last weekend's
one-day Green-tailed Towhee. Unfortunately, I forgot to grab the
directions to the bird off my desk, so I got in a lot of hiking and very
little birding! I got the Towhee spot finally after an hour and 40 minutes,
when it should take 20 minutes. The exercise felt good.
On one of the many trails that I took and got lost on, I saw many more
White-crowned Sparrows than Monday 9/18 [when I tried to find the Towhee by
running breathlessly after Mike Rogers as he effortlessly zipped up to the
Towhee spot]. Also 2 very fresh Savannah Sparrows, and 1 Lincoln's Sparrow
in the "Song Sparrow" spot near the GTTO spot. Like last week, there were
also Wrentits and Hutton's Vireos there. I encountered the underside of one
warbler with an olive back and bright yellow underside in the bottom of a
large Coyote Bush -- but that was all I got to see despite crawling on my
hands and knees to sneak up to the bird and see it from under the bottom of
the bush. (I am sure the parents with children and biking teens enjoyed
this view!)
Good birding!
