All,
This morning after getting good views of the NORTHERN PARULA [county
life bird #328] and after re-finding the MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER with Kathy
Parker we, along with everyone else that morning, missed the Green-tailed Towhee
[Mike Mammoser and I finally left at about 11:30] and I then saw what I thought
was at least one BANK SWALLOW on Elizabeth St in Alviso. After reading
Mike Rogers recent post (3 BASW) I became aware that I probably also had three
BASW and that I had probably seen at least one earlier. My problem is that
I only counted those BASW with the spike extending from the breast
band! I did see a couple swallows with wide breast bands with no spike and
assumed that they were juvenile Tree Swallows not BASW. The breast bands
on the other two BASW [without the spike] did not seem very well
defined, in the future I will be sure to also look for pale forehead. I
was surprised to see the VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW (I had one) and the NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
