All,
This morning 9/18/06, I refound the NORTHERN PARULA at 7:05am (Dave
Weber arrived later and said he had already seen it before 7am!). The
bird stayed around until 7:15am, but was pretty uncooperative, staying
concealed in the vegetation on the back side of its favored alder and a
few nearby trees. I gather it was still being seen as late as 9:00am
(fide Mike Mammoser, who I bumped into as I left Arastradero Preserve
later). Bob Reiling and Kathy Parker also refound the continuing
MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER just about 30 feet north of where the willows
start again in the middle of Stevens Creek north of L'Avenida (same spot
as on Saturday).
I next headed to Arastradero Preserve to look for the GREEN-TAILED
TOWHEE. Lots of CALIFORNIA TOWHEES at the spot, but no GTTO before I
left at 9:30am. I did see my first-of-fall GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW and an
immature WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on the way in with Kris Olson. Also heard
two BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS (Kris later saw one of them), lots of PURPLE
FINCHES, and two flyover PINE SISKINS. Lingering VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS
were still foraging overhead as well. Several other birders arrived as I
was leaving and hopefully will have better news to report later.
