Re: [SBB] Question about Canada Geese (lack of)

Just this last Saturday I led a birding trip for SFBBO
to Oakland's Lake Merritt. Although out of the SBB
area, I did learn a Canada Goose fact that I was not
aware of previously. Maybe it has some meaning to
your observation too.

Canada Geese are resident at Lake Merritt and folks
are counting their numbers all the time. It was
discovered that although they have several hundred of
geese living and breeding at the lake throughout the
year, their numbers increase to over 1,500 in June.
The folks from the "Lake Merritt Institute" said many
Canada Geese come to Lake Merritt specifically to molt
and once the molt is over the geese leave.

>From what I understand (and I know I will be corrected
if I am wrong) it takes about 4 weeks for them to
complete their summer molt and they are flightless
during much of this time.

There were Canada Geese all over this area, but we
also had a Peregrine Falcon hunting throughout our
morning walk. The falcon took advantage of the
high-rise buildings and pigeons found at the lake.
