Folks:
This morning, 9/11/06, I birded the Sunnyvale Baylands, making a
rough loop from the last parking area along the Meadowlands Trail,
then going up to the play area, then on to the Baylands Trail out to
the boardwalk, and then back along the mitigation area. Although
foggy in Palo Alto and Menlo Park early, it was clear here. The best
bird was an immature BLACKPOLL WARBLER at the east end of the mature
cottonwoods, seen twice over an hour's period. Other birds, mostly
migrants, were 2 "WESTERN" FLYCATCHERS, a SAY'S PHOEBER (my first
this fall), a CASSIN'S VIREO, 2 WARBLING VIREOS (Baylands Trail
cottonwoods), 21 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS (in marsh),
a WILSON'S WARBLER, and 3 WESTERN TANAGER. Most migrants were near
the cottonwoods/eucalyptus on the Meadowlands Trail. Many were
flying back and forth to the eucs by the play area. I love September!
