All,
At about 10 am this morning (9/7) Frank Vanslager and I had
a juvenile RUFF in the first pond on the right as you head out the RR
tracks from the EEC entrance road. After watching the Ruff for about 30
minutes we continued on out the tracks to the junction. Later Mike
Mammoser had two Ruff in the same pond unfortunately one flew shortly after
he found it just before we got back to the pond. However it was clear
that the remaining Ruff was a different bird as it had limp; it also had a
whiter throat, the neck and chest was not as brightly marked and it seems
to have retained all of it's juvenile plumage while the first Ruff had
already replaced a row of scapulars (on the lower row centers were not
as dark and the edges were a light gray rather than a buff color). Later
Peggy Don, Mike and I had the first Ruff about a 100 yards further along the
track while Frank was continuing to watch the "Gimpy" Ruff. Both Ruffs
were smallish being heavier than but about the same length as nearby
LESSER YELLOWLEGS (nearby GREATER YELLOWLEGS were much larger [longer and
heavier] than either Ruff) and in my opinion both of the Ruffs are
Reeves. Both birds had grayish-green legs (the hurt Ruff favored it's
left leg but seemed to have all parts of both legs and feet). Mike
Rogers managed a quick lunch time view and Peggy was still photographing
the hurt Ruff when we left at about 12:45. Earlier we had a begging
juvenile CASPIAN TERN on the first island in Salt Pond A16 and we had two SNOWY
PLOVER near the RR junction.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
