[SBB] cooper's hawk and osprey

This morning I got a breathless call from a co-worker.  "There's a big hawk outside Mitchell's window.  What is it?".  I rushed over to find an office filled with people staring out a second-story window at an adult Cooper's Hawk.  Just as I started explaining how this bird was designed to pursue other birds, the Coop launched itself down into the parking lot after a gray squirrel.  The Coop missed, giving the squirrel time to dash off along the edge of the lot; the Coop made one more pass, but the crazylegs squirrel made it to the safety of a tree.  Afterwards I expanded my explanation to include the fact that although designed to go after certain prey, most raptors will go after anything they can catch.  This is at Lawrence and Kifer in Sunnyvale.

Yesterday while driving south on 101 towards the San Jose Airport, I saw a long winged raptor low over the freeway.  As 101 crossed the Guadalupe River near the airport, an Osprey flew up over the river on the airport side.
