Hello Birders,
Last Wednesday evening Debbi Brusco and I checked out Sausal Pond at the
lower portion of Windy Hill OSP, and were instantly treated to a WOOD DUCK
and a noisy GREEN HERON. The Wood Duck gracefully departed to the safety
of a less open area where it swam to a log, soon to be joined by a second
individual. The first duck swam back to where we were quietly standing,
sans cameras. It would have been a nice photo op! We are wondering if
these were juveniles. We distinctly noticed a darkish brown color to the
crown and a hint of an eye ring. The bright blue speculum was visible on
both birds, giving a nice contrast to the mottled brown feathers.
As the Green Heron noisily "kak-kak-kak-kak"ed on a log to our right, we
found two more on the opposite side of the pond. A female COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT added an additional splash of color to our experience.
We continued on our hike and saw an unidentifiable moving object in the
path ahead of us. By now it was beginning to get dark, but binoculars
showed us a BEWICK'S WREN bathing in the fine dust in the middle of the
trail. A new bird for my "dust bathers" life list!
Finally, as the sun was setting disturbingly fast, we heard a single call
from a distant GREAT-HORNED OWL.
Happy weekend!
