Folks:
This morning, 10/25/06, there was a feeding frenzy of AM. WHITE
PELICANS in salt ponds A1 and A2W. I counted 310 in A1 and 480 in
A2W. A few minutes earlier I noted 100-200 in the southern frontage
pond in the Palo Alto FCB. These are not high numbers for a typical
fall, but we've had few concentrations this year. I also counted 22
BROWN PELICANS, 51 GREAT EGRETS, and 19 SNOWY EGRETS also working the
fish bloom. There were probably 500-1000 gulls, mostly Californias
and Westerns that were hanging around the feeding flocks. There were
two BURROWING OWLS on the mound across from Michaels.
At Shoreline Lake I noted an EARED GREBE, a GREATER SCAUP (the
permanent injured male), and four SURF SCOTERS. Ron Thorn had large
flocks of Surf Scoters moving south into the Bay this week, but
they've not yet reached Shoreline Lake.
