This morning (11/16/2006) at the little pond below
Monte Bello Preserve's Gate 5, at least one flyover Pine Siskin was among the
many small finches in the area (American Goldfinch, House Finches, and a
single Lawrence's Goldfinch were also present - none of which are common up
here). Purple Finches are the "common" finch species at the pond and
they were well represented too (I counted 5 but suspected many more hidden in
the woodland vegetation.) Other notables included a female-plumaged Hooded
Merganser and the two continuing Soras. 128 Cedar Waxwings divided among 4
subgroups were a high number here. Robins and Varied Thrushes were numerous and
in constant movement to and fro, making a head-count difficult.
On 11/14 shortly after sunrise, a single Lesser
Yellowlegs was a first for the pond (and perhaps for the preserve!)
