[SBB] Zone-tailed Hawk at Summit Ridge!

Today (Nov 7) at 3:50 p.m. I saw a juvenile ZONE-TAILED HAWK flying over Summit Road southeast of Hwy 17! I first saw it while driving southeast in the vicinity of the junction with Old Santa Cruz Highway, as it flew generally southeast along the ridgeline, passing from the Santa Cruz Co. side into the Santa Clara Co. side. My initial look was quite a nice one as it soared up from the right and banked, passing over the road in front of me, and cutting low over the trees. My jaw hit my lap, you bet. I was able to keep up with it as it worked its way down the ridge line to the vicinity of Morrell Cut-Off, where it spent about 6 minutes soaring up over Summit Ridge, offering a fine study. A Red-tailed Hawk was soaring nearby for comparison, but no other raptors. I last saw it heading south from the ridgeline over Morrell Cut-Off and the upper part of the watershed of the West Branch of Soquel Creek, SCZ, leaving view behind some trees.

A first county record for Santa Cruz, and I think for Santa Clara, too.
