On Monday, 6 Nov 06, I helped with the baywide shorebird count, tallying what was to be found at New Chicago Marsh. Highlights included 2 of the imm female RUFFS, one at State and Spreckles and the other on the south side of the entrance road to the EEC. One of the STILT SANDPIPERS was also found. There were 8 LESSER YELLOWLEGS scattered about the place.
Raptors included a very dark MERLIN, probably suckleyi, that streaked by just over the tops of the pickleweed. The OSPREY was over the slough, near the EEC, and an adult PEREGRINE FALCON was perched on one of the entrance road power towers.
I had a HOUSE WREN scolding at me right around the EEC building.
First thing in the morning I was led by Steve Rottenborn to a TROPICAL KINGBIRD he had found along Zanker Road. Nice bird to start the day with.
On 7 Nov 06 I went to the Waterbird Pond at
CCFS to look for the golden-plover that Steve had found there. After not being able to find it, I went up to the banding trailer. Here I met Steve coming in and within minutes he was back to tell me he had refound it. We spent some time watching this bird and discussing its characteristics. Based on our discussion, I have to agree with Steve that this is likely an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER.
