All,
This morning along the trail above Sandy Wool Lake Frank Vanslager and I
had a few distant sightings of GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, a breeding
plumaged male BLUE GROSBEAK [this bird looked different than the one seen last
Thursday (5/4) as the belly was all dark blue on the flanks],
RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS (one pair M & F), LAZULI BUNTINGS (one pair M
& F) and a GREAT-HORNED OWL. Near the parking lot we had a
pair of (M & F) HOODED ORIOLES. Several singing WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES
were in trees around the lake. We then drove up to the crest of
Sierra Road (parked near the corral) where we had a fairly close view of a
Grasshopper Sparrow on the fence heading north, a couple views of HORNED LARKS
along the road and two GOLDEN EAGLES perched on a power tower. A walk
down the railroad tracks at New Chicago Marsh failed to yield
anything "noteworthy."
Take care,
Bob Reiling
