[SBB] Grant Ranch CP - 5/6/06

All,

I spent 4 hours this morning 5/6/06 birding the northern portion of Grant Ranch County Park from the Washburn Trail that heads into the park, starting from the "White Barn" visible from the highway. I was hoping for spring migrants, but they were few and far between; I tallied 3 singing BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS and 3 singing WILSON'S WARBLERS. No Western Tanagers, no empidonax flycatchers of any kind...

The birdiest spot was along the road, near where the trail heads east from the highway - I had 41 species here alone, well over half the total species count of 71. I was surprised to find 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS here - getting quite late for them!

A quick stop at Grant Lake turned up a GREEN HERON and 2+ BUFFLEHEADS.

Other totals of interest include 2 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES, 1 CASSIN'S VIREO, 2 HUTTON'S VIREOS, 9 WARBLING VIREOS, 8 LAZULI BUNTINGS, and 2 PURPLE FINCHES. A herd of 25 adult WILD BOAR was sheparding 20 piglets. just northeast of the White Barn.
