I popped by steven's creek resevoir today before heading to work.
pretty quiet -- four or five double crested cormorants, not much else
but fishermen.
but I saw, on the far side of the water, something. Not sure what it
is, and to be honest, even trying to take shots at 600mm and blowing
them up, I couldn't get a decent shot. But my first reaction through
the binocs was eider or scoter. The bad photos that I have show a
light/white body, dark head, long neck, duck-like beak with white
cheeks and a darkish band across the eyes. it was clearly acting duck-
like, diving under to feed. It's fairly good sized -- smaller than
the cormorants, but not by much. seems to ride fairly high in the water.
I'm going to head back later -- I didn't have time to hike around to
that side of the water, or push for a better shot, and it may well be
nothing, but it really struck me as unusual, and not something I've
been seeing around the area.
the best shot I was able to get is here:
