This morning (Wed, 4/12) I did a few spot checks around the Almaden area
and have a few birds to report.
A baby eaglet was seen on the GOLDEN EAGLE nest on the transmission tower
along McKean Road. Although I think I saw some additional white fuzz in
the nest, only one for sure raised its head above the nest at this time.
This has to be a tough nesting season for the eagles. I check this nest
site fairly regularly and during all this cold and gloomy weather I've seen the
adult Golden Eagle sitting on the nest with beak open, apparently panting.
A calling PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER was seen this morning along Alamitos
Creek by La Foret Restaurant in New Almaden. This is another site I've
been checking regularly since early March. Normally I see this species at
this locale anywhere from early to mid-March, but this season it's been almost a
month late in showing up.
Final bird-of-the-morning was a WESTERN KINGBIRD at the end of Fortini Road
near the Stile Ranch/Fortini trailhead.
Wishing us all in the Bay Area some sunny skies in the near future -
