From my open bedroom window early this Monday morning at 2:30 AM, I heard a
COMMON POORWILL calling repeatedly. It was hard to locate its location in
my neighborhood, as the window listening site on the front of the house often
receives echoes from the hills behind, while the sprinklers in the rear yard
were too loud to allow me to hear clearly while outside there.
My house's backyard fronts Piedmont Road at the foothills in Milpitas, with
an orchard across Piedmont and the open grassy hills above. This is just
south of Calaveras Road where it enters the hills up to Ed Levin Park.
This is a first in my 20 years here, and numerous nights owling or hiking at Ed
Levin in the hills above!
