[SBB] Stevens Creek birding

This morning Ginger and I birded the Stevens Creek area from
7-9:30am. Stevens Creek reservoir had a pair of COMMON MERGANSERs. Up
Stevens Creek we found an AMERICAN DIPPER gathering moss from a rock
(nesting?). In the parking area just south of the intersection of
Stevens Canyon Road and Mt. Eden Road we found TOWNSEND'S WARBLERs
feeding in the oaks, and a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK calling from a
sycamore on the north side of the road.

In the Villa Maria Picnic Area of Stevens Creek County Park we got
excellent looks at a male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER in full
alternate plumage (our vote for bird of the day!). We also saw a
beautiful male WESTERN BLUEBIRD, and saw a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flying
above the creek. There was some rain, but not quite enough to send us
back to the car.

In the Bay Tree Picnic Area we finally saw one of the WARBLING VIREOs
we had been hearing all morning. There was a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK
sitting in one of the trees there as well.

McClellan Ranch had a pair of BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKs feeding in one
of the feeders. A BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was in the sycamores on the far
side of the creek.
