All,
This Morning Frank Vanslager and I got and early start at Smith Creek (Mike
Rogers car was already there so I guess it wasn't that early).
Unfortunately we opted to check the creek first and saw very few
Warblers all morning long. Lots of BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, a WILSON'S
WARBLER and a nice view of a CASSIN'S VIREO were our best birds. Ran
into Mike and Richard Jeffers on our way out of the creek so we decided to
try their "hot spot." Unfortunately our only bird at this spot was a brief
view of a FOS WESTERN TANAGER. Later we climbed the hill and got a
FOS WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE (very windy the whole time). The open area
southeast of the farm house in Grant Ranch was overrun with WESTERN KINGBIRDS
(often two or three in the same small tree) when we got there. There
must have been at least a couple dozen WEKI in this fairly small area along and
near the parking lots. Frank then spotted a FOS
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER east of the ranch house and later several more were
heard and seen along the trails south of the ranch house. There
also were good numbers of BULLOCK'S ORIOLES in the area but the best bird of the
day was an absolutely brilliant breeding plumaged male Western Tanager found low
in a tree near the car as we prepared to leave.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
