SBBirders---

This morning I was driving down Campus Dr. at Stanford next to the
driving range when I saw bird commotion by the side of the road. A W.
SCRUB-JAY was hopping up and down, apparently tussling with another bird in
the dry leaves. The second bird turned out to be a CALIFORNIA THRASHER,
hunkered down as if to protect itself from the angry jay. Coincidentally,
this is the exact location where I picked up a mortally wounded CATH about
10 years ago.
Two nights ago I heard a WESTERN SCREECH-OWL in my yard in south Los
Altos. They have been semi-regular over the past decade in spring, but
don't know if they're actually breeding in the neighborhood. I know there
is a nest record from Arbor Ave. just west of Foothill Expwy., about 1/2
mile from me.
The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW that showed up in our yard in January was
still present on Monday April 17. It's white supercilium and other field
marks have developed nicely in the past three months. Our 2 FOX SPARROWS
that were present from November throughout the winter apparently departed
around Apr. 3. Of the 13-15 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS that wintered in the
yard, it looks like about half have departed.
Out of county: Last night I added a new bird to my Oakland Coliseum
list, a BLACK PHOEBE grabbing insects over the crowd during the Tigers-A's
game. The only other phoebe I've seen at the Coliseum was a Say's Phoebe
at a Rolling Stones concert in 1989.
