All,
Yesterday 04-08-06, I led my Palo Alto Adult School birding class to
Gilroy Hot Springs Road, followed by Canada Road, with a side trip to
Jameson Road. The weather was stupendous and we had a few seasonal
firsts. BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was seen along GHPR a short walk from
the Hunting Hollow parking lot. WOOD DUCKS were in the creek and in
the trees visible from the road. We saw perhaps 6 individual Wood
Ducks as well as a pair of COMMON MERGANSERS. In the woods WARBLING
VIREO and CASSIN'S VIREO were detected on the trail leading into
Henry Coe State Park, accessed from the bridge. HOUSE WREN was
numerous along the creek and their singing was heard almost
constantly. Along Jameson Road, off of Canada, we found a small group
of WILD TURKEY, a GOLDEN EAGLE, two WESTERN KINGBIRDS and many YELLOW-
BILLED MAGPIES. WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were spotted as well.
After the class outing yesterday, Cricket and I headed over to
McClellan Ranch to find Orioles. A pair of BULLOCK'S ORIOLES was in
the sycamore grove near the outdoor amphitheater along the creek
trail. HOODED ORIOLE was also seen in the palms near the old orchard.
Most exciting to us was a PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER seen in this same
area.
Today, I led an SFBBO trip to Coyote Hills Regional Park (out of
county, I know), we spotted HOUSE WREN, WILSON'S and ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS, two WESTERN KINGBIRDS on the hillside, several ALLEN'S
HUMMINGBIRDS and a CASSIN'S VIREO by the visitors center. Only one
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was see, but also heard.
Finally, I went up to Smith Creek to scout out the spot for next
week's bird-a-thon. Nothing was happening mid afternoon, which isn't
too much of a surprise I guess, especially because it started to
rain... But down hill from there, a few hundred yards from Twin
Gates, a very cooperative RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW appeared when pished.
