[SBB] Palo Alto and Shoreline

Folks:

Yesterday, 3/13/06, I stopped by Shoreline Lake at the Lakeside Cafe in the
morning. I saw only a single BURROWING OWL while driving in. On the lake,
the number of Common Goldeneyes are dropping. My best count was of 18
birds, but more were hidden while diving. Among them was a female BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE being courted by a male Common. A Horned Grebe is still around.

Today, 3/14/06, I stopped by the Palo Alto Baylands around lunch at the
high tide. An immature GLAUCOUS GULL was in the middle of the estuary
there and then flew to the Duck Pond, but did not stay long. This bird
appeared to be a 2nd-cycle bird, although the eye was still fairly dark,
and the adult-type gray mantle feathers were not very extensive. It still
showed a sharp demarcation between the pink and black of the bill, but as
with a 2nd-cycle, it showed some lighter color at the immediate tip. A
pair of Northern Harriers were courting and the male was doing his
"sky-dance" over the marsh, a continuous change of linked U's.
