This morning (5/17) I hiked Wood Rd Trail from the start at Mt
Umunhum/Hicks Rd past Guadalupe Creek, then up to the chaparral and back
again.
Not a great variety of birds, but some worth mentioning. CASSIN'S
VIREOS were quite vocal all along the route. HUTTON'S VIREO and WARBLING
VIREO were also seen and heard. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were also vocal
and the only warblers noted on this trek. Other birds of interest included
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and
DARK-EYED JUNCO (with young).
On my way back at mid-morning I encountered a Coast Mountain Kingsnake
stretched across the trail. I know, I know - not a bird - but such a
beautiful example of our local fauna with its glistening bands of red, black,
and white.
