Today 5/18/2006 at lunchtime I checked nestboxes at
Arastradero Preserve. Among a few Lesser Goldfinches along the fenceline
overlooking Hwy 280 were 4 Lawrences Goldfinches. I was able to confirm 2 males
and 1 female among them. I have seen this species here most years I've checked
when the fiddleneck seeds ripen up, but usually a couple of weeks earlier than
this.
A few bluebird young had hatched over the past
couple of days. V-G Swallows re just finishing up their nests and the first
couple of eggs have been laid. Tree Swallows are a bit farther along sitting on
clutches of 5 or 6.
At Hidden Villa the buntings stopped singing this
week. Also the tanager, alas. At least I saw a Sara Orangetip butterfly here
yesterday, and a Lorquin's Admiral the day before (at Arastradero today
there was an Anise Swallowtail.)
