I went to Skyline Ridge OSP today. A beautiful, male
PILEATED WOODPECKER was working the snags around the nature center. The
sun coming through the overcast made for spectacular views. His red crest
and cheek patches were glowing as brightly as the wing patches on nearby
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS. He was calling regularly so I could see his tongue
vibrate as he did so. Other woodpeckers working the area included a pair
of NORTHERN FLICKERS giving their similar but much less dramatic calls and an
ACORN WOODPECKER sitting in the middle of the trail, apparently gathering up
gravel. Near the ranger station, I had a very close by and at eye
level ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER singing. A Coyote crossed the path just 50
or so feet in front of me and disappeared into a thicker. A few minutes
later, a burst of CALIFORNIA QUAIL chatter came from the same thicket. I
suspect mayhem, or, at the very least, attempted mayhem. Best Regards, Kirsten R. Holmquist |
