Re: [SBB] Continuing Black-chinned Sparrow

Hi Bob,

Congratulations on the re-find. To clarify about the "closed area", I was referring to the off-trail slope where the bird has been singing, not the signed trails. There is no "Elephant Mtn. Trail"; that's still the Hostel Trail as it passes over the summit. That split in the trail is the point where Toyon Trail originates from the Hostel Trail.

Good birding,

Garth

All,

Between 9:30 and about 10:00 this morning, 5/26, Rich Page, Frank Vanslager and I heard the Hidden Villa BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW singing on the hillside across the valley from the Hostel Trail.  The bird was heard best from an area below where the Hostel Trail forks into the Toyon and Elephant Mt. Trails with a view of the opposite hillside (it was also heard from other areas lower down the trail).  I should note that there was no evidence that the Elephant Mt Trail was closed (no signs but climbing higher failed to improve the view of the opposite hillside and the bird was not heard there).  The most "noteable" bird at the Coyote Creek Field Station was a poorly seen BONAPARTE'S GULL and a single basic plumaged BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was in New Chicago Marsh (pond near State and Spreckles).  The wind was horrible at times.

Take care,
Bob Reiling
