All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I had a PILEATED WOODPECKER at MP SCL11.34
on the southern edge of Skyline Blvd where it was heard
calling, was seen flying and as it worked it's way to the
top of a conifer (with a missing top). Earlier Frank first heard the bird
doing it's high pitched, fairly short territorial call at MP
SCL11.20 (repeated later at SCL11.34 when we saw the bird). More
interesting was the fact that the bird also did a very slow, and long
Northern Flicker type call with an irregular rhythm and tone at
MP SCL 11.34. We were not familiar with this call and were
therefore unable to identify it when it was heard some 30-40 minutes
earlier in upper Sanborn Skyline County Park across from
the entrance to Castle Rock State Park. RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were heard
softly calling from the tops of conifers thru out the area. As we were
leaving Frank approached to within 7-8 feet of an alert but fearless
and very plainly marked Audubon's YELLOW RUMPED WARBLER that was on
the ground near his car. This bird was essentially all gray-brown with a
very pale grayish-yellow throat, a bright yellow rump, and a lightly streaked
belly but had no yellow on the flanks. I assume that this bird
was a recently fledged juvenile. A quick stop at Charcoal Road produced
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS and LAZULI BUNTINGS in addition to the "usual
suspects" while a stop at Monte Bello (Gate 5, the pond, and Gate 4)
was not productive.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
