This evening, July 4, I birded the Alamitos Creek along Queenswood, south
of Camden in Almaden Valley. Seven Vaux's Swifts were seen in the
short distance to Almaden Rd. A Purple Finch was heard near the
Almaden bridge over the creek. In previous years I'd seen W. Kingbirds
here, so I crossed Camden and birded north. At the start of the dirt
trail across from Carrabelle Park, I found a family of W.
Kingbirds. Three downy WEKI fledglings perched together on a Sycamore
tree branch couldn't have been cuter. One adult stayed with the young
while the other hunted. When that adult returned with food the other
adult would fly off. Cal. Quail were taking a dirt bath on the trail and
a loud Belted Kingfishers rattle heard near the creek. Missing
were the Cal. Thrashers that used to be numerous here.
