This morning, 20 Jun 06, I had a singing BELL'S VIREO
along Coyote Creek near the entrance to the golf
course. From the golf course entrance road off
Monterey Hwy, take the paved bike path towards the
north. About 120 yards past the Sycamore Rest Stop
look to the left, towards the creek. The bird was
singing in the sandbar willows across the water
channel there.
A little further downstream from here I flushed a pair
of WOOD DUCKS. A few GREEN HERONS are also present in
places along the creek. Just south of the entrance
road to the golf course I had a juvenile LARK SPARROW,
fully fledged and hanging out with HOUSE FINCHES.
In the last few days I've had a number of RING-NECKED
PHEASANTS crowing from the open areas west of the
creek in this vicinity. I don't know how well this
population has been tracked.
The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES are still breeding on the
golf course. I had a female carrying food to a
different location in the reeds along the edge of the
water hazard ponds than what I saw some weeks ago. The
male was still there as well. Today it looked like
workers were removing some reeds from the edge of this
pond, although they weren't yet at the nest spot. I
wonder how far they will go.
