I set out to bird along Casa Loma Rd. this morning but made a detour to Santa Teresa Park because of dense fog ahead. Driving along Fortini Rd. I saw three Western Kingbirds, three W. Bluebirds, seventeen Lark Sparrows, and two Am. Kestrels, all perched on telephone wires. A pair of White tailed Kites and a Hooded Oriole were seen from the parking lot. It was quiet on the switch back trail except for a few Rufous crowned Sparrows and Cal. Quail. I took the short cut after crossing the first ridge and walked east along the creek. Here I saw a family of Ash throated Flycatchers, a fledgling being fed by adult. Two more W. Kingbirds and juv. and adult Rufous crowned Sparrows also seen. An accipiter and juv. Red tailed Hawk flew over, then it was quiet for a while. Once on the Fortini trail I found a Huttons Vireo, pair of W. Bluebirds, more Rufous crowned Sparrows and one Vaux's Swift flying with Tree and Barn Swallows.
A W. Kingbird pair were feeding nestlings in their nest on a telephone pole along San Vicente. Only two babies were seen in the nest which I believe is their second brood. The base of the nest was a thick layer of cottonwood fluff.
As I drove home I realized I hadn't seen any Golden Eagles for a while. A few minutes later I was in my backyard watering the garden when a beautiful adult Golden Eagle flew over. As I write this three Band tailed Pigeons are at the bird feeder and Hooded Orioles continually feeding at the oriole feeder. The Hooded Orioles are suddenly bolder, coming to the feeder even when I'm in the yard. Their constant contact calls can be heard most of the day. They should be leaving soon.
