It has been awhile since I've had an easier time viewing unusual birds. My wife was at a rehearsal today, so I spent about 45 minutes birding around Almaden Lake Park where I had good views of the Little Blue Heron foraging on the eastern side of the lake, in flight twice, and then back on the heron island, where there were also Great Egrets, Black-Crowned Night Herons, and Green Herons. There was a very vocal Bullock's Oriole making sure I was watching him near the restrooms. I also heard (but didn't see) Pacific Slope Flycatcher and Yellow Warbler while I was walking down the bike path to the south. (I also had the good fortune to meet Janna Pauser and her friend Joan Busch--hope I got that right. Always nice to put a face with an e-mail address.)
I then drove up to Rancho San Antonio about 11 AM where the Western Screech Owl was very easy to spot. (The directions posted on this list were
exact, and I was helped by the fact that a couple of ladies were already there taking a picture.) What an amazingly tolerant bird so close to a very busy path. I got views of the owl sleeping, preening, and glaring (at least I would have been glaring if someone had been watching me trying to sleep). It was still there when I returned from hiking at 1:30 PM. While hiking the High Meadow/Wildcat trail loop, I also saw Western Wood Peewee, Hutton's Vireos, Black-headed Grosbeak, and heard what I thought were Warbling Vireos and Orange-crowned Warblers.
There were still a number of Mariposa Lillies and Blue Dicks along the High Meadow trail.
A very nice way to spend a day!
