Birders:
Yesterday the Yellow-breasted Chat at the South County Regional
Wastewater Authority plant in Gilroy sang fairly steadily between 11 am
and noon, when I was there.
After signing in at the office (1500 Southside Drive in Gilroy), I got
directions and permission to drive on the outermost levee to the
facility's southeast corner. The Chat sang mainly from the line of
willows that extends west along the southern edge of the facility's
south boundary levee. Once or twice the bird flew southwest across an
open field to other trees to sing there, but it returned to the willows
to resume singing. Despite its best efforts to hide, I was able to get
semi-satisfying glimpses of the bird.
Occasionally I heard a sound that I tried to turn into a second Chat,
but in the end I concluded there was only one bird singing.
