Among the goose families I saw here (Almaden Lake) the other day were
youngsters which had already largely acquired the adult plumage, but
were smaller in size.  So at this time of year one has to use field
marks other than just size to identify a Cackling Goose.  One question
I have:  is the relative shape and size of the bill a reliable
separator under these conditions?  I'm not questioning the earlier
report, but I do wonder about this p oint.
