Folks
Lots of stuff happening with the organization of "higher order" (in other
words family level etc.) taxonomy of birds. A lot of this is based on
molecular work, with some great stuff being published left right and center.
I just wanted to note the one direct effect this break up of the Old World
Warblers has on California. The Wrentit will become part of a family that
includes some of the Babblers, the Parrotbills, and the Sylvia warblers! If
this change is made the name of the family becomes problematic and you can
refer to Don's page on the warbler split for more details.
So the Wrentit becomes the single New World member of an Old World
family, as has been thought in the past. The details of its closest
relatives are now much clearer though, and include some Sylvia warblers that
sort of look like a Wrentit...if you squint hard.
